Meet the Team: Steven Spragg

Behind the hipster beard and high vis, is an Ornithologist, amateur Photographer and valued Ecojobs Team Leader.

Steven’s had some interesting jobs over the past 3 years with Ecojobs – stem injections to fight Phytophthora dieback in Kalamunda, removal of the aquatic weed Hydrocotyle along the Canning River, dune restoration for the City of Nedlands and planting along the fringes of Lake McLarty and Birchmont for DBCA.

From outside of Ecojobs he brings experience in – the handling and trapping of reptiles from Bold Park, the restoration of natural areas in North Eastern Thailand through Khon Kaen University AND he’s currently enrolled in a Master of Science.

Great to have you on the team Steven.

Perth’s Record Winter Rains put Wetland Plantings on Hold

Perth’s Record Winter Rains put Wetland Plantings on Hold

While the eastern states are struggling with drought, Perth has experienced its wettest winter in years.

This is no surprise to Ecojobs staff, who have had to delay planting some wetlands for weeks, waiting for waters to subside.

Our team arrived at Bibra Lake to find the holes prepped for new seedlings had turned into a sea of puddles!

With the return of warm weather, we can finish off the final plantings and start the next phase of natural areas maintenance, weeding.

Perth’s first winter seedlings are in!

Perth’s first winter seedlings are in!

The City of Kalamunda got in early, and were well prepared for this week’s impressive rainfall.

Last month, our Ecojobs team of 4 spent the day augering soil, planting seedlings, and protecting them with tree guards. All that is left is to soak up the rain!

We have teams planting seedlings throughout the Perth metro area from May until July.

Bring down a wetland bully, the invasive bullrush Typha orientalis

Bring down a wetland bully, the invasive bullrush Typha orientalis

Ecojobs staff Jan van der Walt and Steven Spragg have been working hard to bring the bully bullrush (Typha orientalis) down!

Wetlands need careful management where this invasive and aggressive species of Typha grows. Typha infestations interfere with water flow (restricting access to water by wildlife), shorten bore drains, reduce water quality, and provide breeding grounds for vermin and mosquitoes.

This week, Jan and Steve are trialling a few methods of removing T. orientalis: pulling the rhizome, cutting back and drowning the plants. Some of the rhizomes are huge! (see photo)

This wetland will soon be ready for the 2018 planting season, and the Typha stands replaced with native wetland species.

Summer is Tree Watering Season for Green Skills’ Ecojobs

Summer is Tree Watering Season for Green Skills’ Ecojobs

It’s February – hot and dry here in Perth. Our Ecojobs team has been working hard through the summer season spreading mulch, hand weeding, herbicide spraying and maintaining reserves.

Tree watering is vital in this period for newly planted trees and seedlings. Ecojobs Supervisor Ben is pictured in our tree watering truck, giving a newly planted street tree a good soak.
