Green Skills Albany has been busy in 2017 extending their office building to create a large community space that will be available for hire by community groups and individuals to run workshops, life skills classes and community events. Pictured above is Diane Evers, former Green Skills state manager, who had the vision for this project and secured the funding, standing on the site of the demolished back rooms.
Several rooms were knocked down at the rear of the Albany office, the foundations were dug out deeply, soil replaced, and the building brought up to the same level as the rest of the rooms before the new building began to take shape. We also gained a universal access toilet and some neater storage spaces inside our shed building.
We are so excited about using the spacious, well-equipped kitchen after doing our office washing up in a large tub on a table since April! The new space is much more energy efficient than the old building, and also includes an array of solar panels that is producing more energy that the office uses.
This week, contractors have been tidying up final touches and workers filled new raised garden beds ready for hardy edible plants. It’s already been planted out with tomatoes and basil for summer. A local business, Back In Style, made us some solid outdoor benches and planter pots out of upcycled pallets.
We gained official access just in time for our end of year Christmas party (2.5 hours before the event!). How do you like our toilet paper Christmas tree?
The space will officially be launched next year. This project was completed with support from Lotterywest and Great Southern Development Commission.
