Whale Shark, star of SunSmart Albany Kite Fiesta

A whale shark, blue whale, frilled lizard and many other creatures and box kites, filled Albany’s skies last Sunday 24 March 2019. This brought joy to the many hundreds of people including children, adults and the young of heart who came down to join in the fun.

Thanks to Healthway for sponsoring this SunSmart event, to Michael and Jan Alvares of Kite Kinetcs, the City of Albany, to the McCullan clan (Kristi, John, Evi, Shanit), Basil Schur,David McNamara, Rachel Pontin, Anne Sparrow and everyone else at Green Skills for helping making this event happen.

 

The 2019 South Coast Festival of Birds And Biodiversity Concludes

The South Coast Festival of Birds and Biodiversity 2019 concluded on the 10 April  co-ordinated by Green Skills and BirdLife Australia.

Over 30 events comprised this Festival with a hundreds of participants, young and old. Here are pics from some of the events- Lots of fun and learning and a strong focus on conservation.

Come and enjoy the best of Denmark’s Up-cycling, Reuse, Repair. Gain some skills! Be inspired. Admire or even purchase some of the incredible art and craft on display. Or kick back and enjoy some food or drink. Freehand wines have a beautiful selection of wines for sale (and full sized glasses) while you listen to some music. Saturday at 1pm Digg’n the Jig will play an unplugged set and Sunday 2pm Leif Lebbing will perform some of his classic tunes. There is something for everyone and amazingly entry is free.

Denmark is known for it’s amazing contemporary dance performances and this night will not fall short of that. Three world class Denmark dancers will explore the darker side of waste! 6th April, 9pm, Denmark Civic Centre,$15 Waged $10 Unwaged

Annette Carmichael (barely off the plane from a U.K. project) in collaboration with Circular Box (James Gentle, Jex Von Kobra, Ruth Maddren, Jennie Newman, John Briggs) and projection artist Tim Dunn will blow your mind. The group will explore the unseen world the inner workings of the things we surround our selves with in our every day lives.  The dark moody projection sets the scene Circular Box’s Intonarumori  start to grind/screech/plink/howl away taking you to another world. Then enter Annette enters it all drops back and well the rest is for you to see for yourself!

Plastic Fish from the amazing mind of Nari lee’s is a multi dimensional projection/ dance piece looking at our obsession with plastic’s effect on the ocean and ocean inhabitants. We are all having to look very carefully at the things we purchase what will happen at the end of theses products life. This powerful works is yet another reminder that we need to change and fast.

Sumer Addy(Dancer) with experimental musicians James Gentle Mark Gretton dig deep into the piles left by fast fashion. Every day huge amounts of clothing that is perfectly good goes into landfill. It’s time to stop! There is enough clothing on the planet at the moment to keep us going for a long long time

The Friday night of the festival with the Denmark Up-cycle Collectives  “Up-cycled Fashion Parade”, “Possible Futures – Waste Reduction in Denmark – public Discussion Panel” Tipmass Carols sing-along with Eclectica and ” The Tip Shop Dj”. What a night!

Come Down and be there to discuss the future of waste reduction in the town. I know you all have a lot of questions! Now is is your chance!

Gertrude WellEase of the Chamber of Blessings with her amazing eye for fashion detail will lead you through the incredible range of up-cycled fashion being created and worn in this town. The clothing from a diverse range of talented local up-cyclers including Ruth Maddren, Shannon Hawks, Kamali and a selection of work from the up-cycled fashion workshops leading up to this festival and more. Based on last years parade its bound to impress. Some of the clothing will be for sale through the weekend at the Not Waste Bizarre. Last year the models loved the clothes so much many of them bought pieces. To top that off local original vintage 80’s Gamboy music for an all round funky up-cycled fashion parade. Huh what does that mean? ‘One Game Boy’ James Gentle’s electro act with all music written and performed on Gameboy, nothing but dirty old school beats.

The Tip Shop DJ has collected an eclectic collection of records to spin to keep you dancing. The Tip Shop DJ a former long term member of the 78’s records team knows what he is looking for as he trawls the second hand shops for those rare gems.

And that’s just the start of the weekend Saturday and Sunday morning we have workshops 9 till 12 that will help you rethink waste! The two arvo’s 1230 – 430pm the Not Waste Bizarre info stalls, activities, performances, food drinks, clothing, art and more………
