Australian Bluegums Plantation help protect Albany bushland from weedy wattles

Australian Bluegum Plantations, community members and Green Skills working together to tackle Albany’s worst weed, Acacia longifolia

Green Skills, Australian Bluegums Plantation staff and community volunteers joined forces in November to control a large stand of invasive Sydney golden wattle on a private property in Littlegrove near Albany. Green Skills has a long-running program fighting the spread of Sydney wattle in the Littlegrove and Torndirrup areas, and in 2017 the program has benefitted from a $5000 grant from ABP aimed at on-ground control and containment of Albany’s worst environmental weed. The morning was a great opportunity to put a dent in a troublesome local wattle infestation, as well as giving ABP staff a look at some of the work undertaken by Green Skills in the local community.
This busy bee was the last one for 2017, keep an eye out for more in early 2018! Our first one will be in Littlegrove on Weds February 21st from 9am-12.30pm. Please contact Rosie Smith, Green Skills Weedy Wattle Coordinator on 9842 1334 or 0401 578002 or [email protected] to register your interest.

This program is supported by funding from Royalties for Regions

Weedy Wattles project smells like two-stroke

Green Skills Inc staff Rosie Smith, Aaron Banks and Dylan Lehmann were out and about at Montgomery’s Hill vineyard near Albany last week, giving a large stand of Sydney golden wattle some much-needed chainsaw therapy. Ably assisted by the vineyard’s new owner and his family, the team worked hard to clear a wattle infestation threatening remnant bushland on the property. Getting on top of this infestation is especially important as the vineyard is situated next to high conservation value vegetation in Bakers Junction nature reserve and along the Kalgan river. Top marks to the vineyard owners for taking the initiative to control Albany’s worst weed!

This was the last on-ground wattle control work for 2017, there will be plenty more busy bees and general wattle-bashing continuing in the new year.

81 participants have graduated through the Green Skills local Green Army programme, supported by Conservation Volunteers Australia and the Federal Government. The Green Army teams traversed the great southern region from Frankland River in the west, Bremer Bay in the East and up to Gnowangerup in the north.

The Albany and Denmark based projects have now come to a close but the achievements will be long lasting. These include:

  • 115 000 seedlings propagated and planted
  • 2033 hectares of weed management focussing on Sydney Golden Wattle, Senecio glastifolius, Victorian Tea Tree and Taylorina
  • 254 m3 of rubbish picked up
  • 106 hectares or revegetation on public and private lands
  • 180 hectares of erosion and public access works such as trails
  • 55 community groups, local governments and events were assisted
  • 25 kms of fencing to protect native vegetation
  • 65 flora, fauna or weed assessments
  • 29 Indigenous knowledge awareness events

Green Skills would like to acknowledge the support they have received during the programme from the parents and guardians of participants, Dept. of Parks and Wildlife, City of Albany and all local governments of the Great Southern region, community groups including Oyster Harbour Catchment, Torbay Catchment, Bremer Bay Trails, Fitzgerald Biosphere, Wellstead CRC, Bush Heritage Australia, Gilamii Centre, Denmark Weed Action Group and more, Southern Regional TAFE, St John Ambulance.

The Green Army was an Australian Government initiative that supports local environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia. The program provided opportunities for young Australians aged 17-24 years to gain hands on training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields, while participating in projects that generate real benefits for the environment.

Green Skills, with three offices based in Albany, Denmark and Perth, continues to operate all its other operations and projects.

Green Skills Inc is a non-profit community environmental organisation, established in 1989, is committed to the promotion and demonstration of sustainability by supporting the creation of sustainable employment opportunities, providing quality training and employment services, and through the management of a range of exciting projects.
